Celebrity cruise – Italy, Montenegro & Slovenia

We arrived in Rome on June 29th and stayed in an area close to where we stayed before.  There are lovely parks and easy walking to restaurants. The weather was still very hot so we just relaxed at the property and enjoyed the pool and spa.

Ken enjoyed an inside tour of the ship. This was taken on the navigational bridge.

We arrived in the port of Livorno on July 2.  We booked a tour as the transfer to Florence is over one hour.  It was an incredibly hot day, topping out at 43 degrees.  We took refuge in some churches and enjoyed gelato to cool down.

Beautiful old churches in Florence.
Incredible architecture in the old churches.
Incredible sculptures in the middle of Florence

We visited the port of Portofino, Italy the next day.  We transferred to the pier by tender.  Portofino is a playground for the rich and famous and is therefore very expensive.  We took a cab to the beach area but did not swim as the sun chairs that lined the beach were rented for 400 Euros for the afternoon – not in our budget!

Tender boats took us from the ship to land in Portofino.
Lovely old buildings in Portofino.
Lush vegetation and steep hillsides in Portofino.

The next day we arrived in the port at Naples.  Neither of us like Naples as we find it very dirty.  We had planned to go to Pompei.  However our tour was cancelled.  We tried to hire a cab to take us there but could not find one with a driver.  We soon learned that the cab drivers were on strike that day.  We settled for a walk around the harbour area and spending the afternoon on the ship.

On July 7th we arrived in Sicily at the port of Messina.  It was a lovely day and we walked ashore and were lucky to hire a private tour on a horse carriage.

Enjoying the highlights of Messina in Sicily.
King Neptune in piazza in Messina.
We sailed around the boot in Italy headed to Montenegro. We encountered a fierce storm along the way. Unfortunately winds prevented us from anchoring and proceeding ashore via tender.

View across the harbour from the boardwalk in Koper, Slovenia.
We enjoyed the port town of Piran in Slovenia. We had a senior cab driver who shared a lot of personal perspective and history of this country.
Our last port was Venice. Things are different since we were here last time. Ships now have to arrive in Ravenna or Trieste. It was a 3 hour bus ride from the port to Venice.
We shared the gondola with some women from Ecuador and really enjoyed the experience.
View from Rialto bridge in Venice of the Grand Canal. It was packed with people.
Interesting masks in Venice. This one features the Greek protective eye.
Enjoying the Celebrity Constellation. Smaller ship with incredible service.

We have now arrived safely in L’Estartit in the Costa Brava area of Spain and are enjoying it very much.  We look forward to updating you about our adventures here next.

Wow. Hope you are enjoying Italia! I think we’re a bit Italied out after being there on and off since May 1. Enjoying this part of Spain. Hope the weather is a bit cooler for you. So great to hear from you!

I love following your adventures! I wish we were still on the catamaran. I hate to admit that Tami was right about the 7 pound average weight gain! Of course the food in Rome didn’t help!
