Phu Quoc – Vietnam’s Pearl

Beautiful pearl sculpture in the south part of Phu Quoc

We flew from Ho Chi Minh City to Phu Quoc Island on March 15th.  This slice of paradise is only 574 spare kilometres and is known as the pearl island for it’s pristine and natural wild beauty.  Oysters thrive in the area’s clear waters and it is one of the leading exporters of fish sauce and sea food.

We stayed in an area called Sonasea in the Southern part of the island.  Phu Quoc is off the coast of Cambodia in the Gulf of Thailand and is blessed with beautiful weather and clear skies – no pollution.  We rented a small apartment so we could cook our own meals for the 15 days we were there.

Our motorbike that got us around

Like most places in SE Asia, motorbikes are the common way to get around and ours was a lifesaver.  It’s also very inexpensive compared to taxis or Grab which is SE Asia’s version of Uber.

We ventured to the south part of the island and caught the Phu Quoc cable car to Hon Thom island for a visit to Aquatopia.  This cable car is the longest overwater cable car in the world running 8km over water.

Each cable car can hold up to 30 people
Beautiful shady grounds for relaxing at Hon Thom island.

We were captivated by the large number and size of these koi at Aquatopia.
Endless numbers of fishing boats could be seen from the cable car.

Beautiful flowers lined the streets in the area near the cable car on the Phu Quoc side.

It was amazing to us the infrastructure that is in place on this beautiful island with almost no tourists there.  Entire resorts and large residential type developments – many resembling European areas – sat largely vacant.  We asked many people about this.  The construction started before Covid and continues in anticipation of the expected increase in tourists over the coming years.  It is certainly beautiful and even in our area with the lovely square with the night market, we witnessed new shops opening up every day.

Sunset town was one of our favourites.
Sunset town is like being in Italy with the streets climbing up onto the hillsides. Streets were named Positano and Amalfi.
Gorgeous buildings in Sunset Town at the island’s south end.
Incredible sculptures in Sunset town.
Paradise on earth can be found at beautiful Bai Khem. It was recommended to us by the locals.

Typical Vietnamese food. We loved it all.

Lovely sun beds near the pool at the Sailing club as well as the beach.
We would often visit the French bakery for a light breakfast and then relax at the Sailing Club.

We are now enjoying the beauty and relaxing pace on Koh Samui in Thailand.  We leave here for Bangkok on April 14th and fly back to Canada on April 17th.  We look forward to updating you about our last few stops in Thailand before we return home.
