Koh Samui Thailand

Choeng Mon beach close to our place in Koh Samui

We flew from Phu Quoc, Vietnam via Bangkok to Koh Samui, Thailand on March 29th.  It was a relatively easy process to pass through immigration and transit to our next flight.  We arrived in the late afternoon and were able to get some groceries that night as we settled into our apartment.

Big Buddha on the flight path to the island.

We stayed on the north end of the island where there were many temples and Buddhas.  This large one can be seen when you are landing.  It was very hot during the time we were there but we still respected the temple dress rules.

Ken made friends with some iguanas on the beach.
Typical local shopping vendors.

The meat and fish are right out in the open with small makeshift fans keeping the flies off the goods.  We also shopped off the food carts in the streets.

Preparing for departure to Pig Island from the south shores of Koh Samui.

We did a day trip to Pig Island.  The departure point was in the south part of the island – almost an hour drive from where we were staying.  We travelled by long tail boat with 8 other people over to Pig Island.

Arriving on the white sand shores of Pig Island.
The pigs loved to interact and hang out with all the tourists.
This big sow was very hot and seeking out some cool water.
People of all ages enjoyed interacting with the friendly pigs.
Beautiful temples in our neighbourhood.
These temple grounds were absolutely stunning.
It is called Wat Plai Laem and was really stunning.

We discovered this paradise on a motor bike ride around our neighbourhood so were not properly dressed for temple touring.

This complex features Chinese and Thai architecture.
Beautiful structures and peaceful atmosphere at the temple near us.
Sculptures with specific meanings were in all the corners at the temple grounds.
Lovely waterscapes completed the tranquil atmosphere.
Ken relaxing on Choeng Mon beach. It was very beautiful and quiet compared to Chaewang Beach where all the party action is.
This little iguana really liked Ken.
Enjoying dinner out one evening.
We spent a day at The Deck beach club where you can enjoy the beach, pool, drinks and great food.

We made friends with one of the local tailors and had several items of clothing made for us.  Ken got copies in linen of all his favourite pants and shorts along with some nice new shirts.

We saw this little cutie getting groomed in a local shop one evening.
We witnessed this gorgeous sunset while out for an evening motorbike ride on the road to Big Buddha.

We are now back in Canada and getting settled into our new condo in West Kelowna.  We are still working on the purging process but are very much enjoying the simplicity of our new lifestyle.

Travelling has taught us how to live in much smaller spaces than most Canadians are used to.  We also learned to shop daily (or almost daily) for the food we would make.

We will work on a recap blog of our 17 months of travel to share some interesting tidbits.  We plan to set out next fall and after a 5 week stop in Mexico, will travel to Central America and then spend most of the winter in South America.  We will update the blog with those stories next winter.

Thank you for your interest in our experiences   It has been a joy to share them with you!
