Fun, Friendly Fiji 🌺

We flew from Sydney to Nadi, Fiji on November 20th and checked into our suite on the waterfront at Wailoaloa Beach.

Fiji is comprised of over 300 islands scattered over a million square miles of which about 100 are inhabited.  We stayed on one of the two main islands called Viti Levu.  The capital city of Suva and main airport at Nadi are located on this island.

The people in Fiji are very warm and welcoming and friendly.  We were greeted with fresh hibiscus flowers which all the ladies there wear in their hair.

All the men and women wear necklaces everyday that are made of seashells from the beach.  We bought some as well at the local handicraft market for $2 each.

The shops along Nadi streets are owned by people from India. There is a large Indian influence in Fiji.

We were treated to spectacular sunsets every night.
Day trip to Denarau Marina to enjoy shops and restaurants.

Historical note – cannibalism was practiced in Fiji just over 120 years ago.  A missionary from Australia was cannibalized and shortly afterwards all the water sources in Fiji turned to sulphur like water.  A traditional healer said that the people must call over the missionary’s family and ask for forgiveness.  After this was done, the water turned crystal clear and today Fijian water is known as some of the best water in the world.

Fijian money is very colourful! In every country we have to quickly learn the local money and conversion rate to our money. This is $210 Fijian which is $131 Canadian.
We walked the beach every day – about 3km and enjoyed this piece of driftwood that reminded Ken of a dragon.
There were fireworks displays several times a week.
Incredible live music at night. This jazz band had very talented musicians.
