Costa Brava Spain – Catalonia Wonderland!

After a few lively days in Venice, Italy, we flew to Barcelona for a few weeks rest in the Costa Brava area.  Our friend Penny helped guide us to the area that would be best for 2 weeks of relaxation and exploring the small, quaint seaside villages that line the Costa Brava coast.

We chose L’Estartit as our home base and rented an apartment style accommodation that was only one block from the beach.  L’Estartit has an incredible 10km long beach with beautiful sand and shallow, warm Mediterranean ocean waters.

Very wide beaches with shallow water.
Beaches were quiet in the mornings for our walks but filled up quickly.
Looking over the water at Medes Islands.

The area is rich with history.  Centuries ago pirates and corsairs terrorized all the coastal villages and used Medes islands as a base.

Gorgeous promenade in L’Estartit was filled every night with families and people strolling in the cooler air.
We took a day trip to Figueres to take in the Salvador Dali theatre and museum.
Incredible architectural design to showcase his work.
Dali’s work is varied with several mediums on display.
It’s a very interactive experience at the Dali museum. We walked into this room and just saw a few pieces of furniture with a huge golden arch. But then you climb a ladder and look through a mirror – and this is what you see!
The Dali jewels were phenomenal.
Creative mind and a very interactive experience at every exhibit. Dali jewels lips and teeth in jewels.
This little train drove by our apartment several times a day. We took it one day for a tour of the town.
Cats are loved everywhere in Europe. Here is the stray cat feeding station close to the beach park in L’Estartit.
Day trip to visit SaTuna and Cap de Sal and Begur.
Lovely little area but much smaller beaches than ours.
Scenic SaTuna beach.
Wonderful lunch at this farmhouse restaurant in the country.
Local produce used on the menu – tomatoes in Italy and Spain taste incredible and are grown this way.
It’s a diverse agricultural area. We saw many types of hay, grains and fruits being grown. These apples were almost ready for harvest.
Unbelievable how big the corn was!!
Lovely lunch.
Evening sky in L’Estartit.

Since this area is Catalonia which includes Barcelona, there are many differences from Spain.  They have their own language – Catalon – and some different foods and customs.  The area we stayed was filled with tourists from France as the border is just north of Costa Brava.

Barcelona promenade at sunset.
It was after 8pm and the Barcelona beaches were filled with people playing volleyball and paddle boarding.
We enjoyed some lovely tapas along the waterfront in Barcelona.
Entrance to the marina area with restaurants along the waterfront.
Beautiful Barcelona night sky.

There are not any pictures of Robbie as I became ill during this time but am back on my feet now.  We are leaving Barcelona tomorrow on an 8 day cruise.  More updates to follow!
