Bali Bliss – not always

Incredible Bird of Paradise flowers

We started our 28 day journey in Bali on December 4th after flying in from Sydney, Australia.  Our first 2 weeks were scheduled for Seminyak area with our last 13 nights being in quieter Sanur.

Looking up Petitenget beach on our first day. An incredible rainstorm followed that lasted for over an hour.

We knew we were coming to Bali at the start of the rainy season.  We had frequent showers during our first 2 weeks and torrential downpours during our second 2 weeks.

Breakfast in our villa pool to start the day!
Siska and Putri took great care of us and cooked us incredible breakfasts each morning.
Bali is a Hindu country and there are offering shrines everywhere.
Walkway to our villa in Seminyak.
Turtle sunning himself along the waters by the walkway.
Typical busy street scene in Seminyak. There are scooters driving madly in and out of traffic and massage places everywhere.
Ken enjoying the sunset at Seminyak beach.
Gorgeous night scene at Double Six beach.
Rice fields mixed into busy city street scenes.
We walked by these cuties every day – no fences – just a tether and Mom calling the babies if they wandered too far.
We had an incredible tour to Ubud with our friend and driver Ketut.
Lots of great monkey interaction at the Monkey Forest in Ubud.
Magnificent beauty at the rice terraces.
These rice terraces are almost ready for harvest.

Robbie really struggled to breathe in Bali with the air filled with smoke from incense and garbage burning everywhere.  The day in Ubud was literally a breath of fresh air for us in all this greenery and beauty.

Visiting a temple surrounded by lotus gardens.
The visit to Ubud was one of our best days in Bali.
Robbie enjoyed a wonderful experience at L’Atelier where she was able to handcraft a personally designed fragrance using Balinese flowers and oils.
An unusual Christmas tree made of wine bottles. There were not many signs of typical Christmas as we know it.
Balinese statues like this were found in many places.
Traditional offerings to the gods that covered the streets everywhere.
Enjoying a healthy breakfast. There is a big focus in Bali on health and good food.
Enjoying snacks and wine by the beach on our first day in Sanur.
Traditional Balinese outrigger boats lined the Sanur beach.

Unfortunately within a few days of arriving in Sanur we both became ill with a respiratory illness that is still persisting a month later.  We attended the medical clinics several times where we were given medications to help us.

The rains were torrential and one night while walking in the dark along the wet street, Ken twisted his ankle in a pot hole.  The pain intensified and me being the least sick had to make the trips to the pharmacy for drugs for pain and creams to ease the swelling.  Unfortunately this brought on a gout attack as well that is now just finally subsiding.

Our villa pool in Sanur.
View of the outdoor portion of our villa in Sanur. The torrential downpours caused major leaks onto our bed and in the shower.

The constant rain caused street flooding and some nights we removed our shoes to walk barefoot through the waters in the streets.  This no doubt was not helpful to us getting over our respiratory infections.

Unfortunately the inclement weather and our poor health, along with the leaks in our villa and the bad air, caused us to not have a very good time during the last part of our Bali journey.

It’s always important to stop and smell the flowers.

By the time we left Bali, Ken was in a wheelchair. We will update more details in our next blog about our brief time in Singapore.

Great pictures. Very different part of the world.
I feel for the both of you. It must be so difficult dealing with illness so far away from home. Sending you “recovery” vibes.

Hey you two❤️ Never fun when things aren’t going as one hopes, however that will be in your past soon, and then back to the incredible journey! It’s been interesting here too! Weather wise, we’ve kind of had everything this winter, it’s quite warm at the moment so has me thinking about golf! I’ll have my 2nd surgery in March so will be in full swing by end of May. Betsy continues being the best goof we’ve ever had, and certainly has brought a lot of entertainment. My daughter, kids, 2 cats and a dog are coming to live with us in Feb, it’s beginnings for them, and we are welcoming with open arms. Your photos as usual are gorgeous, and I love the journey through them. Keep going, be strong, stay healthy and we will see you again when you are back!
